Ingolf Wunder, pianist

Ingolf Wunder achieved worldwide recognition at the 2010 International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, winning several special awards including Best Concerto and Best Prize for Polonaise-Fantaisie, as well as second prize overall. As prize-winner he follows in the footsteps of some of the world’s greatest pianists: Martha Argerich, Krystian Zimerman, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Mitsuko Uchida and Maurizio Pollini.

Highlights of Wunder’s 2014/15 season include his London concerto debut with the London Chamber Orchestra, performances with the NDR Sinfonieorchester Hamburg and a return to the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra. On tour, he performs recitals in Taiwan (October 2014) and the US (February 2015). Other notable performances include the Wiener Konzerthaus, Porto Casa da Música and Schubertiade Hohenems.

Internationally Wunder has performed extensively at many of the world’s leading venues such as the Zurich’s Tonhalle, Vienna’s Musikverein and Konzerthaus, Wigmore Hall London, Théâtre du Palais-Royal Paris, National Philharmonie Warsaw, Berlin’s Philharmonie and Suntory Hall in Tokyo. His debut in London’s International Piano Series led the Guardian to note: “It’s a long time since a young pianist made such an impression on his debut in the Queen Elizabeth Hall. Wunder seems a fearless player, with a totally secure technique that he never flaunts unnecessarily, and the musical intelligence to put it to good use.”

Festival performances have included La Roque d'Anthéron, Klavier Festival Ruhr and the Hohenems Schubertiade. Wunder performs with orchestras such as the Wiener Symphoniker, Tonkünstler-Orchester Niederösterreich, Warsaw Philharmonic, Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, NHK Symphony Orchestra and hr-Sinfonieorchester.

Ingolf Wunder records exclusively for Deutsche Grammophon. His acclaimed first recording - an all-Chopin recital disc - was released in June 2011 and his second CD, 300, in January 2013. His latest recording, Concertos by Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev in collaboration with Vladimir Ashkenazy and St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, was named Classic FM’s Album of the Week.

Born in Austria, Ingolf Wunder’s musical talent was discovered at the age of four. He studied at Klagenfurt and Linz conservatoires and subsequently at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. He remains in close contact with his mentor, Polish pianist and winner of the 1955 Chopin Piano Competition Adam Harasiewicz.

In addition to the Chopin awards, Ingolf Wunder has won several other competitions including first prize at the Steinway Competition in Hamburg, Prima la Musica competition in Austria, and the Concours Musical de France. He also received the City of Budapest Prize at the 36th International Liszt Competition in Budapest in 2001.
